Stone walls
There are many different types of stone walling, each area of the country has its own style built from locally sourced stone. Tranquil Earth generally use Kent ragstone, Yorkstone or Purbeck stone. Above are examples of these materials and how they can be used.
Combining modern construction methods with the traditional art of building stone walls is the most cost effective way of building a stone wall. A concrete footing is laid first then the stone wall is built on it using a method called hidden mortar dry stack. This means that the wall is actually held together with a lime mortar or cement mortar that is hidden from view. These walls have the appearance of a traditional dry stack wall but need far less stone to make the wall stable. Also block work can be built behind the stonework to form a more solid structural wall if it has to retain soil.
Stone walls provide an excellent habitat for all sorts of insects, small animals and mosses and lichenin.
