Sleeper retaining walls

Building retaining walls from timber sleepers is a really cost effective and eco friendly way of creating different levels in your Garden. If you have a sloping Garden or an uneven area that you would like to use, timber sleepers can be used to level the garden. Sleepers can also be used to create raised planting beds or vegtable borders, raised beds are easier to maintain and provides more protection to plants from pests.

Tranquil Earth have created some really interesting features from sleepers, curved sleeper walls, screening posts inlaid with copper, steps and giant benches. Timber sleepers can be used in so many ways it makes them an invaluable material that is both versitile and beautiful.

Tanalised softwood sleepers

These sleepers come in a range of lengths and thicknesses, we generally use 2.4m x 20cm x 10cm as these are easy to handle. They have a long life span as they are pressure treated to prevent rot and water penetration.

Oak sleepers

These timbers are very beautiful, natural oak is a timeless material that will last for generations. When using Oak sleepers care needs to be taken with fixings and bolts as oak is a very mobile when it is still green. Also the sap in oak wood is very corrosive to certain types of metal. Tranquil Earth believe that the best way of fixing oak is with oak pegs, as these will move with the timber as it seasons.

The use of timber in the garden for constructing walls and seating is both eco friendly and beautiful. Tranquil Earth mix chunky timbers with lush planting and stone paving to create a natural feel to lanscapes.
